sorry for being so confused about this, but i may be misunderstanding
the fundamental design of VPATH and how it relates to *targets*.
section 4.5 strongly suggests that VPATH is for prereqs only: "The
directory search features of make facilitate this by searching several
directories automatically to find a *prerequisite*." [emphasis mine]
but the very next page reads, "however, VPATH specifies a search list
that make applies for all files, including files which are *targets* of
rules." [again, emphasis mine]
this can certainly be clearer, methinks. or, i could just be smarter.
