Thanks! Yes, using gfortran helps.
Also, I am able to compile after modifying 'configure' file a bit and after
disabling the 'doc' component. I will check those with the dev source and
then possibly propose some discussions to the maintenance list.

I don't know what /usr/bin/f77 is, but I think you want to use
gfortran instead.
