Gnus and 8-bit characters in subject

The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to gnu.emacs.gnus as well.

For some reason the gnus 5.9.0 I've been using with emacs 21.3.1 has
developed a problem of not being able to followup to all messages
which contain 8-bit characters in the subject header -- some of them
produce an error message from gnus about a missing subject header.

Has anyone else seen this rather strange problem, and maybe resolved it?
