Do you use the builtin FETCHCOMMAND of KPortage? Or the one of your make.conf?
This can be toggled in "Configure KPortage".
We have many problems with the output of the external processes, so this is 
sort of a known issue.

Could you please post your make.conf, make.conf.kportagesave
and the full error message?

Please post also more information about bug #7383. Does this happen when You
select many ebuilds (the statusbar contains all selected ebuilds).
