OK, maybe I didn't wait long enough the first time - I was probably 
expecting the separate window of kportagemaster to tell me it's loading.
I'll have to get used to the progress bar in the status bar.

As far as I know I used the builtin command.

OK, I've just selected configuration and added the PORTDIR_OVERLAY.  The 
resulting make.conf and make.conf.kportagesave are attached.  Now until I
restore the kportagesave one I can't emerge with kportage.  It switches to 
Deps tab as usual but both panes are empty.  Status bar reads "Selected 
ebuilds: app-admin/addpatches-0.1".  If I now click the All pane and 
right-click on aide-0.8 the pop-up heading is "addpatches-0.1" and all 
options other than pretend are disabled.

I just saw it do it when I chose to emerge sawfish-themes.  The left Dep 
pane indicated that portage wanted to emerge gnome-core, rep-gtk, 
sawfish-themes and sawfish - and the right pane shot out of sight out of 
the right screen margin.
