Hello Duncan
As to the USB, I'd try with another stick. I had a similar situation (GRUB 
loaded splash screen and menu, but then stalled), and using another USB-stick 
solved the issue. As to the the "error: ata0,1 not found", I hope you'll get an 
answer from somebody else.
