Building CVS HEAD libtool outside of source directory

I am seeing a problem here building the CVS version of libtool outside of its source directory if the build OS is not the same as the boostrap OS. I bootstrap from a clean CVS checkout under Solaris 10 and then experience a huge number of test failures under FreeBSD and OS-X when using a VPATH build. NTP-synchronized NFS is used to share the libtool source directory. The Solaris 10 host used for bootstrap does not experience any test failures using a similar VPATH build. This leads me to suspect that something has changed in the bootstrap process which is causing a dependency on the boostrap host. Building from outside of the source tree used to work.

Earlier today, most tests were passing under FreeBSD and OS-X. It was determined that if I updated m4 to 1.4.10 the problem with the few test failures would go away. At the same time, I re-installed both Autoconf and Automake after the new m4 was installed so that all hosts are using the latest released version.

Does anyone else encounter this problem?

A gzipped testsuite.log from FreeBSD is attached.
