What version of awk do you use? Can you try these commands?
echo 20050117 | gawk '{printf "%d\n", $1*1000000}'
echo 20050117 | gawk '{printf "%ld\n", $1*1000000}'
With GNU Awk 3.1.4, both yield 20050117000000.
