I was thinking along the same lines.  It's simpler for users if they can
indicate the (absolute) octave using ' and , in the way the always do.
It would be easy to see that the following would be the same:

  \absolute '' { a b c }
  \absolute s'' { a b c }
  \absolute { a'' b'' c'' }
