I'm still getting the problem.  It's possibly something to do with the VM.

I'm going to try one other thing.  I'll simply split the
implementation and documentation into separate issues.  (I'll
introduce the documentation when the first patch is through.

I don't want to put anyone to the trouble of shepherding this for me,
since I can't predict how drawn out the review process will be.
