fink is a strange thing indeed. The stable version is still 1.6.9, which is why I was working with an old copy before.

Can you check that lilypond test.ly does produce a .tex file?
I don't think so. lilypond executes flawlessly, but there are no output files produced in that directory, .tex or otherwise.
