you might need to install a soundfont. For example "fluid-soundfont-gm".

A timidity service can be started on system boot and load a soundfound.
Then you can direct midi-output from frescobaldi to a timidity-port and
use frescobaldis midiplayer. I don't really remember all needed steps,
because nowadays I use Jack and qsynth or for example aeolus, to test a
piece in an ancient tuning. Frescobaldi is routed to alsa-midi-through,
which then can be patched to any input available.

IMO that is fun and quite powerful, but if you just want to play some
midi-files, installing jack might be too much.
