There is also \startTrillSpan/\stopTrillSpan, \startGroup/\stopGroup,
\startGraceSlur/\stopGraceSlur, \startTextSpan/\stopTextSpan,
\startMeasureCount/\stopMeasureCount,
\startMeasureSpanner/\stopMeasureSpanner . 

So there is a clear pattern of \startItem and \endItem being opposite ends of a single thing. 

But the same words used a bit differently might work, so that "the start of a tie" could be called \tieStart and so on (\tieEnd, \slurStart, \slurEnd).
