I guess the question here comes down to what it means to clean up the code base.
To me, that means making the code clearer, less twisty, more modern (like no
mktemp), etc.  Making it more forgiving of sloppy programming isn't on my list.
If we have people working on this who don't know how to use malloc and realloc
properly we should take away their cvs access!
