Back when I first thought of it I had thought of using Tcl to do
it.  But you know what?  At the end of the day I don't really care
which scripting/embedded language we use; just that there is one
as an option because every time I read the mh-format(5) man page I
want to scream.  I say have at it and see what you come up with.

(As an aside: I just took a look at the Lua syntax.  I guess the creators
of it were fans of Pascal?).
