Follow-up Comment #5, bug #41146 (project octave):
I believe the algorithm changed between 3.2.X and 3.4.X so that would explain
the difference. Versions 3.4.X, 3.6.X, and 3.8.0 all produce the same result
for the same input.
Determining the optimum starting point depends critically on the function to
be solved. As far as I know there is no general method for selecting the
initial point. Obviously if you have an idea of where the solution point lies
(from past experience, perhaps graphing of the equations if the dimensionality
of the problem is not too high) then using that point will likely yield good
results and the convergence will be quick.
