Follow-up Comment #7, bug #41116 (project octave):

I now suspect that MATLAB does not use UMFPACK for LU factorization when
nargout=1,2, or 3. I don't think you *can* use UMFPACK in those cases. 

It looks like UMFPACK reserves the right to do column reordering during
numerical factorization, even if you force a fixed column ordering during
symbolic factorization. I see no way to disable that. 

If I am right, it is not possible to duplicate MATLAB functionality for
nargout=1,2,3 without replacing UMFPACK with something else; say, SuperLU.
