With x = [1 2] the following two images have different colors and apparently
also different axis limits:

imagesc(x, x, x'*x) ;
get(gca, 'xlim')
imagesc(x', x, x'*x) ;
get(gca, 'xlim')

ML behaves differently in both cases (same figure, same axis limits).
