Follow-up Comment #1:

The second use case produces a warning which probably indicates something went
wrong.  I tried.

imagesc(x', x, x'*x) ;
warning: operator +: automatic broadcasting operation applied
warning: called from
    image>__img__ at line 198 column 12
    image at line 116 column 10
    imagesc at line 97 column 12
