Follow-up Comment #1, bug #51633 (project octave):

I'm not following what is meant by "For Matlab it is equivalent to a(1)". 
"a()" in Octave is the same as "a(1)" in Matlab?  Is the following what you

octave:40> a = struct ('f', 1);
octave:41> b = a()
b =

  0x0 struct array containing the fields:


octave:42> b.f = 3
error: invalid assignment to cs-list outside multiple assignment
octave:42> b(1).f = 3
b =

  scalar structure containing the fields:

    f =  3
