Follow-up Comment #47, bug #57439 (project octave):

On Linux, if we don't need the rest of the information, we could try using
access().  This checks file permissions, rather than grabbing all of the
stat() data from the inode.

#include <unistd.h>

int access(const char *pathname, int mode);

Importantly, mode can be F_OK, which means just test for the existence of the
file, rather than actually checking permissions.

We would want to benchmark it to make sure it was faster.
