| When I more the header files, they look OK, and the permissions look OK to

Also, does your copy of glplpx.h have lines like

  #define lpx_set_obj_coef glp_lpx_set_obj_coef

and is glplpx.h included by glpk.h?

Call off the dogs. I had trouble getting into the gnu ftp site, so I got
glpk-4.2 as the most recent from one of the California gnu mirror sites.
After I got glpk-4.9 from the real gnu site. the problem went away. Thanks
for your response, sorry for the problem. The make completes without
problems now.

It probably doesn't affect you enough to bother with downloading it and recompiling, but just FYI, the most recent version of GLPK is 4.11. I've found that some of the gnu mirrors are not updated as well as they should be--I've had good luck with http://mirrors.kernel.org/gnu.
