Is there any reason not to compile a fresh, recent gcc and atlas (along with any
other dependcies) into /usr/local, update PATH to hit /usr/local/bin first, and
go for it? Will this give me 64 bit?
I think it is easier to take the time to make a perfect little sandbox rather
than try to dork around with 3 year old patched gcc's and funky veclib's.
