initially

in File select work online
in Edit/Preferences/Behaviour uncheck everything
set a download directory
set a cache size 500Mb
use a pane layout rather than tabbed

then select Get new headers in subscribed groups


then browse headers & messages, unread messages is the total, new unread 
messages are BOLD
the header pane not updating is performance related, whats your hdd doing at 
that time, increase ram its become apparent pan needs  512mb
