You obviously need to run X (aka X11 or X11R6). If you're seeing just a big
black
screen (similar to the old DOS from that other company) try to run 'startx' .
You can't ssh (or telnet *shrug*) in from Windows and expect it to work, you
need to
run X on your unix box, period. If you want to run from Windows you need an
X-server like Exceed or something like TightVNC that can provide Windows
with an X connedtion to your unix box.
As Christophe Lambin said; check your $DISPLAY, it should say something like
":0.0" or "localhost:0.0"
