You could try re-reading it.  The last two lines are what's important.

"Go back to the directory you compiled it in and do
make -n install>install.txt and read carefully."

The "it" referring to gnome-common.

make -n install tells you what install is going to do, or did, in this case. The > pipes the output to install.txt. What you need to look for is where it installed gnome-common and make sure it's in your path.
