Question about speechd, w3m and columns |

Hi
Newbie question, but I haven't been able to find the answer anywhere.
I have emacs and speechd working with festival on the latest version
of Debian Etch, and have just installed w3m.
w3m renders web pages with columns side by side in the emacs buffer,
and I can tab between links in the normal way - ie, down the first
column before crossing to the second column, etc.
But speechd reads across the entire line, including any text from any
and all columns which have text on that line, and ignores column
boundaries. Since most pages nowadays seem to be laid out in columns,
I wonder whether there's a way to make speechd recognize the column
format and read only the text in the current column.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Natasha Pearce
