Well, in general you are right, but we have no idea what sort of
application is Rui developing.  It may well be an assistive technology
(such as a screen reader itself) or an application where speech is its
primary functionality.  In such cases, direct control of speech output
is essential and completely justified.

Also, in my opinion, self voicing applications may still have
justification in special cases.  Having a perfect accessibility
infrastructure is, of course, the ultimate goal, but since we are still
 not really there, self voicing may be a solution for particular real
life problems.  Please, don't get me wrong, I am really talking about
*special cases*.  In general, I am for improving the infrastructure to
avoid the need for self voicing.
