How about Speakup + Speech-dispatcher?

Hello all:

I want to replace Espeakup with Speech-dispatcher for using softsynth 
with Speakup on my Arch Linux system. I recall that one must install 
Speechd-up to do this, but according to the Speechd-up page, it was last 
updated in 2006. Is it compatible with Speech-dispatcher 0.6.7? Or is 
there another more current way to connect Speech-dispatcher to Speakup?
