I applied patch 1 to tcl 7.4 and tk 4.0 (actually 
I did it last year). That's the latest patches we have
applied (I don't know if there are later ones).

Note that (as Ted mentioned) after applying the tcl/tk patches
you will have to re-make tcl/tk...the patches
don't apply directly to the lib files.

I don't know if not having those is the cause of your
segmentation problems.  

Didn't someone have a seg fault problem with under
Sun OS 4.something, too?   Was their tcl/tk patched?

Sorry I can't help more...all the apps seem to run 
fine under hpux.    (except the probe out of raster bounds
problem Ted mentioned yesterday)
