What Marcus was pointing out was that you don't need emacs at all, if
you don't want Java. If you don't need Java, you'll need to clean out
your build directory (or just remove your source directory and
re-untar the archive) and when you run configure, pass the
--without-jdk option, like:

$ ./configure --prefix=/whatever --without-jdkdir

If you *do* want Java, then you'll probably need at least one of the
emacs-20.x series releases. Your problem may or may not be related to
your particular emacs version (without running a test here), but one
thing is sure: emacs 19.34.1 is so old now that we don't do any
testing against it anymore, so we certainly don't recommend using it,
and we don't support.
