Installation Help

Right before going crazy I decided to ask you this lame newcomer question:

How the hell can I install the stuff?

The Windows package worked perfect.
At work, I use Linux (Suse 6.3). Therefore I installed the RPM
(static) for Suse 6.3.

It creates a directory /usr/lib/swarm

Nothing else. Is that ok? The example application tries to find a file at
SWARMHOME/etc/swarm/Makefile.appl
I can't find that file, not even the directory.

I tried the RedHatRPM as well, as SUSE is supposed to be able to read
those. No change.

Then I tried to compile the whole on my own. ./configure is ok, make
seems to work pretty fine until some java stuff happens (see below).

javac --version says "version number: 1.4B-egp1 released on 02/11/2000"
 
Can anyone help me with one of the two issues?
I would appreciate even just a little hint.
