IIRC, the `static' package was just a few additional libraries that
were not compiled as position independent code.  I'd suggest you install
the normal version.

Some Java compilers can't handle these cross-package dependencies.
I suggest configuring with JAVAC=jikes ./configure [etc] (and installing
jikes).
