I'll take a closer look this evening - thought occurs to me that while 
I've been testing en_US.UTF-8 and ja_JP.UTF-8, vile does some stuff to
try to work with both narrow/wide locales (nl_NL vs nl_NL.UTF-8) which
could require some work.
