Thanks, Dave!  I'll proceed, and use this material to populate an
"Environments" section in groff(7) as well.

I started cogitating on this after my exploration of env.cpp last night and
wrote something up, then it occurred to me that the material is better placed
at the ticket you just cited.  See you there.  :)
