There are some easy ways to get to that.
Emacs in screen backed by a dark-on-light rxvt-unicode terminal,
where TERM is screen-256color, is always unreadable.
I'm sure there are other combinations.
Gnus biggest colour problem is horible html backgrounds (backgrounds
which, incidently, do not show up in dedicated browsers). That is even
worse than the light text on white one gets inside screen.
