Why doesn't it help? What's the problem?

I find any fairly dark color for the text makes it unreadable when
the ambient light level is high. Very often I can read ordinary white text
and can't read blue or red text.
However, the worst problem I get with font-lock is when it takes a minute
to read my next command.

That seems like a bug. Perhaps something is setting face properties
directly when it ought to be setting font-lock-face properties.
Can you find a test case and send a bug report?
