I assumed (wrongly it seems) that dired-insert-subdir would parse out
the directory if it was on a filename.. just like
locate-find-directory does. I thought the only difference between
'V' and 'i' was that one would create a new buffer for the dired
output whereas the other would insert in the existing buffer. It's
counter-intuitive that the usage is different. But that's a seperate
(probably personal) issue.

It works on a line that contains only a directory.
