Actually, I now saw, by reading through the earlier postings in the
thread, that Richard proposed a patch fixing the problem for
fringe-mode by setting :initialize to `custom-initialize-set' for the
fringe-mode defcustom.
I still do not understand why `custom-initialize-set' is not the
default :initialize function, since `custom-initialize-reset' is
potentially troublesome.
