Building up-to-date sources in debian sid doesn't exhibit the problem.
Taking the binary I built in sid and running it in ubuntu dapper
makes it crash again.  Even if I run inside a sid chroot using the
dapper X server, it still crashes.  So the problem seems to be an
interaction with the ubuntu X server, font server, or some such.

I'm now building against CVS sources from various dates, trying to
determine which change caused the problem.  So far I've found that it
was OK at 2006-05-06 00:00 and broken at 2006-05-20 00:00.  I'll
continue narrowing the date rate down.
