The release version of gnuplot, 3.7.x, doesn't use it, true, but the
development version switched to automake more than two years ago.
$ pwd
/usr/local/src/cvs/gnuplot
$ cvs status -v Makefile.am | tail -2
GNUPLOT_990328_TRANSITIONAL_1 (revision: 1.1)
$
