Hi,

yes there are some projects out there providing real time os for the 
avr. Some keywords: FreeRTOS, NutOS, µC/OS-II ... have a look at 
www.avrfreaks.com.

AFAIK all of them are "Open Source" but not all of them are "Free" in 
the sense of the GPL. If you want to learn something about realtime 
systems etc. i would recommend to get copy of J. Labrosse "µC/OS-II The 
Real Time Kernel". This Kernel is not "free" but the book is good and 
its easy to use another kernel if you are knowing how things work.
