I'd definitely not change anything on your setup until you submitted
your thesis.

I'm running a self-compiled version of the CVS trunk of Emacs.  But
that's just because I do some debugging and minor changes in Emacs'
codebase now and then.  And this has helped shortening the waiting time
for Emacs 22.

That should be possible.  But you have to know what you are doing.  And
the Debian Emacs setup can get in your way since the packaged version
might pick up libraries from e.g. /usr/local which it definitely should
not but which the Debian maintainers think is a good idea.  This was the
case some months ago.  I haven't checked if they changed it.

AFAIK he had been providing them in a separate repository.  I'm not sure
what happens now with them, after the release of Emacs 22.
