You don't need to checkout anything to make comparisons, as much as Svn supports better offline support, it also supports much better online support.
Eg to compare the root makefile of SOPE 4.4 and SOPE 4.5 w/o checking out anything:
svn diff \ http://svn.opengroupware.org/SOPE/branches/4.4/GNUmakefile \ http://svn.opengroupware.org/SOPE/trunk/GNUmakefileSubversion is definitely worth the move. It has plenty of convenient features.
