As only one of these tasks is performed by configure now, and I have to 
do other changes anyway, I decided it was not worth doing a whole 
reconfigure to get a single substitution I could do myself, 
particularly since I had to make other changes. Furthermore, I keep a 
separate copy of the specs anyway with these changes (except for the 
version number, of course) already done.
