I would _love_ it if Emacs did this, but IIRC, Gerd tried that, and got
shot down because it was incompatible with wacky code in people's .emacs
files.

Maybe now's the time to revisit the issue though.

Another problem with it is that it would appear that nothing is happening as Emacs is starting. Displaying a temporary frame with the splash screen might help, but that brings us back to the original problem on Windows of wanting to override which image libraries are loaded (to avoid Cygwin ones for example, as they cause Emacs to crash).
