    Checking every input method might be too ram or i/o intensive for all
    users, but would make a reasonable option.

If for each input method we record the range of character codes it can
possibly generate, we could quickly eliminate most input methods for
any given code.  Then checking the remaining few would be fast enough
that we could do it every time,
