It may cause some confusion in connection with cursor movement if
there is a glyph with zero width ... where do you display the cursor?
The proper thing is probably to skip over such glyphs by treating them
as invisible, but I don't know how difficult that is.

But if we restrict those elements to the header and mode lines (where
they are most useful), it won't be difficult.


I've put it on my personal to-do list to investigate this.
