I think it matter that you can specify a display property that
generates a zero-width glyph which makes emacs behave incorrectly.
Since I'm about to add code which can generate zero-width glyphs in
more cases, I think I should try to fix that.

Sure, my fixes (with your suggestions incorporated) should make
ruler-mode simpler and more elegant...  Stay tuned!
