I'm confused, why does it _matter_ whether a display property of ""
works or doesn't work properly in the `general case'?  It's clearly
sufficient for the problem at hand (and is already `implemented'), and
the simple extension of the display-property `when' mechanism to support
`cond' as well, plus the additional display-property :width arguments
you've implemented, should solve the ruler-mode header-line problems
simply and elegantly -- and I _thought_ that the ruler-mode header-line
problem was what this thread was about...
